PlumBuddy 1" Valve FAQ

What is the primary function of a PlumBuddy Valve?

The PlumBuddy valve is an intelligent, automated water-shutoff device engineered to reduce the risk of costly water damage. It installs on your main water line and can automatically close to stop the flow of water when leaks are detected by the ultrasonic flow sensors. PlumBuddy gives you remote control through our mobile app and automation options so you can stop leaks quickly and confidently.

Q: What sizes of water lines are the PlumBuddy 1” Valves compatible with?

The current 1” model is compatible with 3/4-inch and 1-inch main water lines.

Q: What is the thread size for the 1” valve?

The PlumBuddy 1-inch valve is designed to work with 1-1/4 inch NPS unions and adapters. The internal diameter of the flow body is 1 inch, and the external connections are male 1-1/4 inch NPS threads.

How does the PlumBuddy Valve know when to shut off water?

PlumBuddy operates in Home, Away, and Custom modes, allowing you to control how sensitive the system is to water activity based on whether you are home, away, or need a specific configuration. Using built-in ultrasonic flow sensing and time-based thresholds, the valve monitors flow rate and duration and can automatically shut off water when usage exceeds your defined limits.

Can the PlumBuddy Valve be controlled remotely?

Yes. You can open or close the valve remotely through the PlumBuddy Mobile App from anywhere with an internet connection.

Does the PlumBuddy Valve monitor water pressure or temperature?

PlumBuddy does not measure water pressure. It monitors ultrasonic flow rate, total water usage, and water temperature, providing real-time usage data, insights, and freeze-risk awareness through the app.

Will the valve shut off during normal water use?

No. PlumBuddy is designed to allow normal daily water use and will not shut off during expected household activity. It only closes the valve when user-defined flow or time thresholds are exceeded, a connected leak sensor is triggered, or when you manually shut it off through the app.

What happens after a leak is detected and the water shuts off?

When the valve shuts off, you will receive an alert in the app and by email explaining what triggered the event, such as a leak detection signal, abnormal flow, or temperature risk. Once the issue is resolved, the valve can be reopened directly through the app or manually on the device.

My valve isn't responding in the app. What should I check?

First, confirm the device is plugged in, powered on, and connected to a stable internet connection. Next, ensure the valve is properly paired and synced within the app; if it is not visible or responsive, repeat the onboarding process to reconnect it. If issues persist, please contact support@plumbuddy.co for assistance.

Where should the valve be installed?

On the main incoming water line before any branch lines, downstream from the manual property shutoff valve. It should be installed before any water softener, RO devices, and before the water heater.

Can it be installed outside?

We recommend installing PlumBuddy valves inside a covered space to prevent weather-related damage to the exterior components.

Does it plug into a 120V outlet?

Yes. A 10-foot USB-C cable and adapter are included with each valve, which can be plugged into a standard 120V outlet

How long does the backup battery power last?

Approximately three (3+) days. Battery time may vary depending on use.

What happens if the WiFi goes out?

The valve will function and will operate according to any customized settings based on the most recent settings received from the app. However, it will not provide app updates until Wi-Fi is restored.

What does the valve measure and display in the app?

Temperature and gallons per minute (flow rate).

Does it have a manual override?

You can remotely open and close the valve from the mobile app (when paired already). There is also an open and close button under the swivel top cover on the valve. And, if the power were to go out and the valve runs out of battery, the valve will default to the open position to always ensure water flow.
